The act of arson, bombings, vandalism, hijacking, harassment and etc with so many could be list down are among major ‘crime’ act committed by the eco-terrorist. The term eco-terrorism has been coined out during the past two decade whereby radical environment and animals right group claim responsible for hundreds of crimes and terrorism act in the name of Mother Nature. Eco-terrorism escalated throughout the US in the late 1990s repeatedly harasses enterprise such as logging, skiing, genetic research, home building and auto sales.
According to FBI, eco-terrorism can be defined “as the use or threatened use of violence of a criminal nature against innocent victims or property by an environmentally oriented, subnational group for environmental political reasons, or aimed at an audiences beyond the target, often of a symbolic nature.“ The FBI considers environmental terrorism as no1 domestic terror in US. The well known group that associated with eco-terror is ELF or Earth Liberation Front.

The group was formed as some members of the group Earth First! Became frustrated with what they saw as an insufficient pace of change and began a group that emphasize on more violence and direct action. Same thing goes to Sea Shepherd Society which was formed by Captain Paul Watson. Captain Watson who is a former member of Green Peace believes that the measured taken by the organization is not sufficient enough to overcome the crisis or problem. He believes when dealing in this business one must use ‘fist’ rather than diplomacy approach.

Other extreme environmentalist compared their fight as the struggle to free slaves or to win the women right to vote which both of the event cause lot of effort and action to be materialized. Some of the environmental group disagree the use of violence in their struggle to justify their cause as it could create backlash and make it harder for the others group effects change. While others believe that this kind of approach are more rationale, favorable and right to their cause as Mother Nature are defenseless against human aggression.
Terrorism in the name of animal and nature protection has seemed to get a lot of attention and steadily increase over the past decade throughout the globe. Many industrialists from plantation into scientific research has fall into the victim of eco-terror. With steady and constant voluntary participant from the public to join their cause and media attention proves that their act managed to caught the eyes of authorities and public. Despite the casualties in this war is still ‘bearable’ however with the increasingly attack by these grups suggest that the first casualties is just around the corner and it is unlikely this rapidly growing movement will going to end up soon.
